ON A WORK TRIP TO THE USA IN 1972, Neville Kennard, the Managing Director of Kennards Hire at the time, saw his first ‘mini storage’ property, which opened his eyes to the possibilities here in Australia. On his return, he built his first 20ft x 10ft storage units behind the Kennards Hire Centre at Moorebank in Sydney – Australia’s first self storage.
Today, Neville’s three sons, Sam, Walter and Jim, independently own the Kennards Self Storage Company which has now grown to 98 locations across Australia and New Zealand, with another ten opening in 2023.
Today, Kennards proudly boasts being one of the largest Self Storage Operators in Australasia.
Team members go through extensive and ongoing training and acutely understand that when customers need storage space, they are often going through a significant event in their life. “Our teams are trained to the highest standards to help relieve the pressures of moving into storage for customers,” said Sam, whose motto is ‘Store With People Who Care’.
“We live and breathe simple, good-old fashioned, genuine customer service,” he said. This ranges from maintaining the cleanliness of a property and managing challenging situations to ensuring a customer’s storage experience is seamless from start to finish. Team members are encouraged to ask for customer feedback, as the company views this as a way to learn and grow.
Another source of feedback and a reason to be proud, are its 21,488 Google reviews averaging at 4.8 stars commending customer service, facilities and procedures – and often praising its team.
